The bathroom is one of the messiest rooms in the home, and because the room gets constant use, it often stays that way. Additionally, keeping the bathroom clean is not a straightforward (or pleasant) task.

Luckily, bathroom cleaning supplies can help. This article lists the many supplies needed for cleaning. While it's easier to splurge on everything, there are some hidden ways to cut spending with alternative products.

Home Cleaning Tools

While you can use these tools in the bathroom, these cleaning supplies are not bathroom-centric. These bathroom cleaning supplies are general items needed to clean every room in the house and must last a long time.

Thin, breakable material or products that don’t operate as advertised won’t make the cut. Save more money by buying products you can reuse after washing instead of disposable products.

  • Rubber gloves*
  • Bucket
  • Mop**
  • Microfiber cloths or hand towels ***
  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Broom and pan
  • Duster
  • Squeegee

*Always have rubber gloves handy to keep your clean hands when working with chemicals or germ-prone areas. For people allergic to latex, choose latex-free rubber gloves or plastic gloves.

** Buying a mop with disposable pads is money wasted. Aim for a mop with a cut end, looped end, or microfiber head. Wash the head after use and let it drip dry.

***A cost-saving alternative to cleaning cloths and hand towels is using unused clothes and cutting them into hand towel rags for cleaning. A second option is cutting up unwanted large towels and beach towels to make hand towel rags for cleaning. However, microfiber will be best for surfaces like glass.

Bathroom Cleaners

bathroom cleaning supplies: different spray bottles

One-half of a spotless bathroom is the liquid cleaners, soapy cleaners and sprays. There are distinctive bathroom cleaning supplies for the toilet, floors, shower/tub, tile/walls, and sink/countertop. They are as follows:

  • Toilet bowl cleaner
  • All-purpose cleaner
  • Multi-surface cleaner
  • Glass and window cleaner
  • Tile and grout cleaner
  • Tub and tile cleaner
  • Wood cleaner
  • Floor cleaner
  • Disinfectant spray or disinfectant wipes

Despite the list, the best bathroom cleaning product is the frugal and eco-friendly version of homemade cleaners. Bathroom cleaners like Clorox bleach contain harmful chemicals that can damage pipes, erode metal, and pollute the air. Most homemade cleaners are safe to use and do not harm skin or irritate eyes.

Given the issues with chemical cleaners, it's best to mix homemade items in an empty spray bottle and use the solution to clean. Choose between reusing an empty spray bottle and buying a new empty spray bottle for less than $10. You’ll need two bottles.

Grab a spray bottle and create your all-purpose cleaner to clean tile, grout, walls, floor, showers, shower doors, bathtubs, sinks, mirrors, and vanities. The mixture comprises vinegar and water. Fill half the bottle with vinegar and the other half with warm water. An optional step — add fragrance like a citrus peel or 20 drops of essential oil. Put the lid on and shake the bottle. This solution is less expensive than buying a chemical-filled bathroom cleaner in the store.

Use the other spray bottle to make a toilet cleaner. Mix 1/2 cup baking soda, 1 cup of vinegar, and fill the rest of the bottle with water. Put the lid on and shake it. Spray the mixture inside the toilet bowl and let it soak for 15 minutes before using a toilet brush for scrubbing. Flush the toilet when done.

Last, clean toilet drains, sink drains, shower drains, and bathtub drains using dishwashing liquid and hot water. Pour 2 cups of dishwashing liquid into the drain and let it sit for 30 minutes. Grab hot water from the faucet and pour 2 cups into the drain hole. Let it sit for 10 minutes and flush the mixture down the drain afterward by flushing the toilet or turning on the faucet.

Brushes and Sponges

While the cleaners soften and loosen stubborn dirt, grime, debris, mildew, soap scum, and hard water stains off walls, floors, mirrors, sinks, showers, bathtubs, shower doors, bathroom doors, toilets, and vanities, the brushes, sponges, and wipes do the rest. They scrub, remove, and wipe up the mess with a little elbow grease. They are the other half of a spotless bathroom.

While you don't have to splurge on these products, it shouldn't cost one dollar either. Dollar items barely get one use before wear and tear. It should last way over three uses. Have these bathroom cleaning supplies handy.

Toilet Brush

The toilet brush removes calcium and limescale buildup and stains from the bowl, drain hole, and jet holes. Buy a brush with an under-rim lip brush attached instead of buying both separately.

Grout Brush

This scrubs the tiny gap between tiles, but you don't need to buy one when you can use a used toothbrush instead. Be sure to separate the toothbrush from the tooth-cleaning toothbrush. Use the grout brush or toothbrush twice a year.

Scrub Sponges

The handy bathroom cleaning supplies scrub walls and floors squeaky clean. The scrubbers usually come in a pack, so dedicate one for the toilet exterior, another for bath/shower, another for sink/vanity, another for walls/tile, etc. The most famous example is the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser.

Scrub Brush

Great for removing hard-to-remove spots around the bathroom. Only grab the scrub brush when the scrub sponges can't remove the stains. Its bristles should get rid of the stains without tearing or scratching surfaces. If you see a peeled-looking spot or scratches, the scrub brush is not the correct one to use.

The Drain Guards

SinkShroom

Don't just make the bathroom exterior spotless using bathroom cleaning supplies. A bathroom is not complete without clear drains. Clogs form when wastewater contains contaminants that pile up and become so large that it blocks water flow. The Shroom products prevent this by catching the foreign contaminants before it becomes a clogged pile.

SinkShroom, TubShroom, and ShowerShroom help with these respective bathroom appliances. The products are easy to insert, remove, and clean. They become a "set it and forget it" type of mechanism.

Another Shroom product to invest in is ToiletShroom. While there isn't a drain strainer for toilets, ToiletShroom is the flexible and durable solution that pushes clogs down the drain and cleans toilet drains simultaneously. Its long handle keeps hands away from the toilet bowl, and its flexible head fits in any tight, curvy drain pipe. The Shroom bathroom cleaning supplies are worth the splurge, and the products are inexpensive for the quality received.
