Being a homeowner is a responsibility because it's your job to ensure your home should be comfortable to live in. This applies to every room, especially the bathroom, because it's where you freshen up. The bathroom can experience many issues, and sink clogs are among them.
Fixing sink clogs is hard if you don't know how to do it well. If left unattended, it can lead to more severe problems that can cost you more money and time. Although there are many techniques you can use to fix the problem, not all methods are guaranteed to resolve the issue on your first try. For this reason, one must know the different ways of fixing a bathroom sink clog, such as:
#1 - Remove and Clean the Stopper
The stopper is one of the most common reasons bathroom sinks get clogged. It can get jammed by the water faucet, and due to this, water will not pass through. To fix this, you must remove the stopper and clean it. To do this, just twist it clockwise and remove it. You will see a long chain coming from the stopper; this chain is responsible for draining water. Remove this chain and clean it up with soap and water.
In some cases, you might see that the stopper is stuck so tight that you can't remove it. In that case, you need to use a pair of pliers to remove it. If you can't remove the stopper, it's broken. If that's the case, you must replace it with a new one.
#2 - Use Boiling Hot Water
If removing and cleaning your stopper doesn't help, you can then try to use boiling hot water to fix the problem. To do this, fill a big container with hot water and pour it into the sink. You must pour boiling water into the sink so that it will dislodge the clog.
You can pour it from the first floor or directly from the tap. If that doesn't work, you can then pour in ice-cold water. The water will help push down the clog so you can easily reach it.
#3 - Try Using a Plunger
For bigger obstructions, you might have to use a plunger. A plunger can push out clogs that are deeper and harder to reach. You can use a plunger if you can't remove the stopper from the sink. Fill the plunger with soapy water and insert it into the sink. Press down the plunger and release it. You might need to do this several times to clear the clog.
#4 - Use a Vinegar and Baking Soda Solution
If the clog is too thick, you can use a vinegar and baking soda solution to fix it. To do this, mix 2 cups of warm water with 1/2 cup of baking soda and pour it into the sink. After pouring the solution into the sink, pour 1 cup of vinegar and let it sit for about 5 minutes.
After that, use a plunger to create suction and get the clog out. You can try using a toilet plunger if you don't have a plunger. Once you get the clog out, remove it and clean the sink.
#5 - Use a Drain Snake
If the clog is too deep, it's best to use a drain snake. This tool looks like a wire, and you push it down through the drain. When it's deep enough, you will see the clog. To get the clog out, you push the wire down, which will grab the clog and pull it up the sink. After getting the clog out, flush the sink with boiling water to remove the remaining residue.
Fixing a bathroom sink drain is more complicated than you think. If you're not careful, it can lead to more significant problems, such as a sewer backup. However, with the proper knowledge, you can successfully fix the problem and save yourself from further problems.
